Pictorial Unboxing

the first impression when i look at this router is “Lamborghini” . The design itself resembles a Lamborghini Hood and it does give the impression of speed!

Astonishing , thats is the only word that comes to my mind when i have this beast on my hand , look at the sleek design !

if you worry about heat build up , worry not because there is so much ventilation on both side and at the bottom .

LED and WiFi toggle can be located on the front of the router and also on the right you can see a USB 3.0 port ! Finally a front USB port instead at the back :-) .

behold the IO 1 USB 2.0 port , WPS toggle , 1 dedicated WAN port , 4 Gigabits Ethernet port , reset toggle and power port .

well now i can brag to my friend that i have a Lamborghini :-)

INTERFACE AND FEATURE

As you can see there a few new features that are included in this router such as Ai protection , Adaptive QoS and Web History

Ai PROTECTION

divided into 3 category

1. Router Security Scan  which will scan your router settings and then it will recommend you to change the settings to increase its security.

2. Malicious site blocking and Vulnerability Protection this will protect you from a phishing website by restricting access to known malicious websites in Trend Micro’s database

3. Infected Device Prevention and Blocking if you turn this on and setup the alert preference, you need to key in your email details and it will send you an email to alert you in the event a device has been infected or a suspicious activity has been detected on your network

ADAPTIVE QoS

Adaptive QoS ensures inbound and outbound bandwidth on both wired and wireless connections for prioritized applications and tasks via pre-defined, drag-and-drop presets: gaming, media streaming, VoIP, web surfing and file transferring.

from what i understand everything is already have been pre-defined so what you need to do is drag and drop a category to your liking

For me it’s always gaming at the top so that I do not have to worry about ping when im P2P torrent at full speed while gaming at the same time, P2P falls into the “File Transferring” category

APPS ANALYSIS

If you turn on the Apps analysis feature this will enable more in depth traffic analysis which can be viewed when you click on a client icon The picture above is an example of what will you see if you enable it .

WEB HISTORY

This is the scariest part of the router ASUS RT-AC87U. It provides you with a Web History feature which i feel is kinda like a privacy breach :-P , this feature allows you to view a history of websites visited by a specific client :-) , scary isn’t it?. But you can disable Adaptive QoS to turn off this Web History feature :-) .

NETWORK SPEED TEST 5Ghz

This is a 4GB dummy file transfer test from my laptop to my PC, with my laptop acting as a server connected via LAN 1Gbps to the ASUS RT-AC87U. Judging from the test my PC which is using an AC USB WiFi adapter ASUS USB-AC56 which has a maximum speed of 867Mbps. The result is 49.7MBps = 391Mbps which is absolutely the maximum speed attainable because the laptop which was acting as the server is using a 5400rpm HDD .

In conclusion if my laptop was using an SSD I’m sure the transfer speed will be more than that or it will be much closer to the maximum speed of my USB-AC56 adapter which is 867Mbps or 108MBps.

For your information ASUS RT-AC87U is rated as an AC2400 router = 600+1734Mbps which totally annihilate my AC56 adapter .

So if you want to achieve close to the ASUS RT-AC87U’s rated performance you might want to grab PCE-AC68 AC1900 WiFi adapter

THOUGHTS

ASUS RT-AC87U AC2400 is the ultimate consumer networking product , I think the SRP for this router is around RM1199 . RM1199 for this is totally worth every sen in my opinion , you get control of your own network, everything is under your finger, not to mention its speed ! With the unbeatable hardware in the router , I would totally recommended this router for who have a large Home/Business networking as with this router you can control your network with ease .
