We already know the OPPO R9s has a fast fingerprint sensor, allowing you to unlock the device almost instantly. Can we make more of it though? The answer is yes, and there are actually several ways that you can use the fingerprint sensor for more than just unlocking the OPPO R9s.

Use your fingertips as shortcuts

You can configure a shortcut to any app you want by assigning it to a registered fingerprint. The OPPO R9s supports up to five fingerprints, which means you can open up to 5 different apps immediately from the lockscreen. Or literally speed dial with your fingerprint when you assign a contact. Why waste time unlocking the device, looking for the app you want, and then tapping the icon to open it, when you can immediately get down to business simply by placing your finger on the OPPO R9s’ fingerprint sensor? Now, it’s convenient.

How to enable this feature:

  1. Tap Fingerprint and password in Settings.
  2. Add a fingerprint or tap on one of your saved fingerprints.
  3. Tap Add a shortcut, and pick whether you want your finger to be a shortcut to an app or a contact.

Keep files away from prying eyes

This is a feature that many of us would have tried with third party apps way before the advent of fingerprint sensors in smartphones. All of us have things we want to keep private, some of us more than others. Scandals can happen if certain files were to reach certain hands. We have had our fair share here in Malaysia. Perhaps they could have been avoided if they simply used OPPO devices?  After selecting the files you want to keep away into the safe, the files will be accessible from the Files app, where you will need to either enter your password or scan your fingerprint to access. Now, it’s safe.

How to enable this feature:

  1. Tap the Fingerprint and password in Settings.
  2. Enable File safe.
  3. Select the files you want to keep secure.
  4. Access your files from the File safe in the Files app.

Encrypt apps for privacy

The OPPO R9s offers built-in app encryption, which will lock the entire app away until you enter the password or fingerprint to access it. It can be used on any app, so that people without your password or fingerprint (which is impossible to have) will not be able to check out your WhatsApp conversation with your crush. Now, it’s protected.

How to enable this feature:

  1. Tap the Fingerprint and password in Settings.
  2. Enable App encryption.
  3. Select the apps you want to lock.
  4. If you want to add other apps, open the Security Center app and tap Privacy permissions, tap App encryption.

Summon Google Now On Tap

The OPPO R9s runs ColorOS 3.0 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which gives it the Google Now on Tap feature. Hold the home button-cum-fingerprint scanner for 2 seconds, and Google Now will analyze your screen’s content to give you relevant search results. You can even select the on-screen text to Google it or copy. A nifty feature of Google Now on Tap is optical character recognition, or the ability to discern text in images. Have a look at us trying it on the KFC coffee cup. Not entirely accurate, but it’s something.

How to enable this feature, if it isn’t already enabled:

  1. Hold the home button.
  2. Tap on “Yes, I’m in!”
  3. It is really that simple.

The OPPO R9s’ fingerprint sensor not only allows you to unlock it quickly, but also use your fingertips as shortcuts, hide files away and even encrypt entire apps to protect your privacy. Also, let’s not forget that ColorOS 3.0 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow nets it the Google Now on Tap feature too. How else would you want to use your fingerprint sensor?
