Sony Launches 400mm F2.8 G Master Prime Lens
At a private launch event in Shah Alam, Sony Malaysia has launched their highly anticipated FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS large aperture super-telephoto prime lens, the SEL400F28GM. It is the first large aperture super-telephoto lens in Sony’s E-mount lineup.
It boasts brilliant image quality, extraordinary focusing speed and precision, and the lightest weight in its class while also having an extremely balaced design. This FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens is targeted for those who capture images in professional sports, wildlife, and nature. Sony mentioned that this lens perfectly completements their extensive lineup of E-mount cameras such as the A9 and A7R III.
To give a clearer idea on what makes the FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens special, Sony highlighted 5 keys points for this lens:
- Fast, precise autofocus maximixes camera speed performance
- Stunning G Master resolution and bokeh
- The lightest in its class for outsntading mobility and handling
- Durability and reliability for challenging conditions
- Full-time Direct Manual Focus and other features support professional shooting
With the use of compatible E-mount tele-converters, it can actually go far as 800mm but Sony also pointed out that doing so will still yield marvelous results and resolution is essentially unaffected. The lens has also been coated with Nano AR coating which helps supress any unwanted glares, ghosting, reflections, and more.
As for durability, the lens is built with magnesium alloy, the lens is dust and moisture resistant, and its front element is coated with fluorine to resist dirt and fingerprints.
We actually got to try out the lens, paired with the Sony A9. Keep in mind, while my skills may be decent, I am not a professional photographer. In the hands of the pros, it will most likely be better but for now, check out some of the pictures I took, ripped straight from the camera with no edits whatsoever:

Pokdepinion: Well, this is certainly a lens I never expected I’d be able to use. Also, 400mm is pretty far. Not sure how it will be like if it’s used with the 2x tele-converter lens. From Petaling Jaya, you might be able to see KLCC quite clearly with that. I’m exaggerating but you get the point.
