A total of 30 Canon DSLR cameras has been found to be vulnerable to ransomware, through both Wi-Fi and also USB connections. As you can tell, hackers can take photos and videos from their victims and hold them to ransom.

The news was discovered by a cybersecurity firm called Check Point, which they uploaded a video on how DSLR cameras can be affected by the issue. You can check out the video down below.

As mentioned earlier, a total of 30 cameras from Canon’s lineup are affected and they include:

  • Canon EOS-1D X
  • Canon EOS-1D X Mark II
  • Canon EOS-1D C
  • Canon ESO 5D Mark III
  • Canon EOS 5D Mark IV
  • Canon EOS 5DS
  • Canon EOS 5DS R
  • Canon EOS 6D
  • Canon EOS 6D Mark II
  • Canon EOS 7D Mark II
  • Canon EOS 70D
  • Canon EOS 80D
  • Canon EOS M10
  • Canon EOS M100
  • Canon EOS M3
  • Canon EOS M5
  • Canon EOS M50
  • Canon EOS M6
  • Canon EOS R
  • Canon EOS RP
  • Canon EOS Rebel SL2
  • Canon EOS Rebel SL3
  • Canon EOS Rebel T6
  • Canon EOS Rebel T6i
  • Canon EOS Rebel T7
  • Canon EOS Rebel T7I
  • Canon PowerShot G5X Mark II
  • Canon PowerShot SX70 HS

Check Point notes that cameras are a great target, considering how they hold valuable personal photos/videos that people are willing to pay for. Although all of the listed cameras are from Canon, they’ve mentioned that it may not be only limited to only just Canon, where other brands that uses the same PTP protocol could also be affected.

Canon has since then advise users to avoid unsecured Wi-Fi, turn off network functions on their cameras as well as to install a new security patch from their website.

Pokdepinion: Man, who would’ve thought of cameras getting attacked by ransomware. At least for me, I certainly didn’t..
