12th Gen Intel Core HX-series may bring desktop Alder Lake to laptops

Boutique laptop makers have always crammed Intel and AMD’s desktop processors into high performance gaming machines, but this time, Intel might be doing it themselves. Intel will apparently be offering a new 12th Gen Intel Core HX-series processors that will pack up to 16-core configurations.

12th Gen Intel Core HX-series to bring more cores, higher TDP

It’s unclear how many SKUs will Intel unveil under the 12th Gen Intel Core HX-series, or what is currently dubbed the Intel H55, although a flagship Intel Core i9-12980HX is reportedly on the way. Instead of the 6P+8E configurations offered by the current flagship Core i9-12900HK, the Core i9-12980HX will allegedly have 8P+8E cores.

There will also be lesser 4P+8E configurations, although I can’t really understand why do we need this configuration when there are already 4P+8E processors in the current 12th Gen Intel Core i5 H-series processors.

What drives us to think that it will be based on the 12th Gen Intel Core desktop chips is the fact that it is codenamed as the S-BGA series. Aside from that, it has a GPU with just 32 execution units, just like the desktop 12th Gen Intel Core desktop processors. That’s a huge step down from the 96 EUs featured by the current crop of 12th Gen Intel Core mobile processors. Not like the iGPU is of much use when put into a gaming laptop, where the dedicated graphics will do all the heavy lifting, and that’s exactly what these processors are intended for anyway.

To ensure that all the cores in the 12th Gen Intel Core HX-series processors have enough room to stretch the legs is its higher 55W nominal TDP. The current crop of Intel H45 chips can be configured with 35W to 45W TDPs, while these 12th Gen Intel Core HX-series processors are slated to span from 45W to 55W. However the current 12th Gen Intel Core H-series processors can boost up to 115W, so it will be interesting to see what will Intel set as the boost power limit for these.

The 12th Gen Intel Core HX-series will probably feature in desktop replacement laptops, or what Intel seems to be calling “Muscle” laptops. While those behemoths of laptops has somewhat fallen out of favor, the inflated GPU prices might actually motivate gamers to pick a desktop replacement laptop over trying to buy a GPU to build a desktop.
