CES 2021: Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4 is Coming to Malaysia

Recently, we reported about the launch of the new Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4 gaming laptops. Apparently, there’s one other new thing for them that we weren’t made aware of at the time, and it’s the ability to upgrade to Cherry MX mechanical keyboards.

Alienware and Cherry have collaborated to produce what they claim to be the “first true” mechanical keyboard into a gaming laptop. Now, you can get the Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4 with a Cherry MX mechanical keyboard upgrade at the cost of USD $150. For the Malaysian market however, it will be a rather pricey upgrade as it results in an additional RM1,202.

For those of you who aren’t aware, the mechanical keyboard for both gaming laptops will make use of the new MX Ultra Low Profile switches, which are 3.5mm thick, which is a lot thinner compared to the 11.9mm-sized MX Low Profile switches. It’s built with stainless steel wings that can swing open and push down. Apart from that, it’s also made of thermoplastic polymer that should be able to withstand heat.

According to Alienware and  Cherry, the travel distance is 1.8mm and it’s said to give a satisfying feedback along with that signature “thock” sound. The way the switch was designed is to aid in typing accuracy and give it self-cleaning capabilities with each press.

From what we understand thus far, the keyboard design in both Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4 did not require any major changes or tweaks to accommodate the new Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile switches. The lid can also be closed just fine, which should give consumers a better idea of how thin the switches are.

The optional Cherry MX keyboard upgrade will come with AlienFX per-key RGH backlighting and full N-key rollover with anti-ghosting, so you won’t be missing anything from the original keyboard. It’s worth noting that all keys except for the function row will be utilizing the new mechanical switches if you opt for the upgrade.

If you’re looking to get the Alienware m15 R4, m17 R4, or simply looking for a laptop that makes use of a mechanical keyboard, this will be your chance as it’s already available for purchase at the time of this writing.

Pokdepinion: I definitely want to give that keyboard a try. I hope I get the chance to do so very soon.
