ASUS ROG laptops spotted with GeForce RTX graphics cards

Leaks are coming out hot and heavy as we are just a weekend away from CES 2019. And apparently one French e-tailer has just jumped the gun with their listing of the latest ASUS ROG laptops with NVIDIA GeForce RTX mobile GPUs.

From the listings, it seems like there will be a number of new models from ASUS featuring the latest GeForce RTX graphics. There will be GeForce RTX 2080 Max Q, RTX 2070 Max Q, as well as the non-Max Q GeForce RTX 2070 and GeForce RTX 2060, fitted into the latest laptops.

• ROG Zephyrus S GX535
• ROG Strix SCAR II G515

The only one model that we probably have not seen is the ROG GX735. We have seen leaks pointing to a 17.3″ ROG Zephyrus S on the way, so perhaps this is the model number for it? It probably would be quite attractive to those who prefer larger screens without having to lug around a huge laptop.

Another detail revealed by the listings is that the GeForce RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 for laptops are expected to sport GDDR5 memory instead of GDDR6. How much of an impact will that have on the overall performance will be quite interesting to see. Of course it could always be a typo. But the GeForce RTX 2080 is listed with GDDR6 memory, so it might not be a mistake after all.

Pricing wise, the ROG Strix SCAR II G515 with a GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR5 is priced at 1573 euros (~RM7392), before taxes. Considering that a desktop GeForce RTX 2060 performs on par with a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, the mobile version should handily trounce the GeForce GTX 1070 which the last generation ROG Strix SCAR II (GL504GS) sported. Even if we account for taxes, the price-to-performance ratio should have changed much with the new ROG Strix SCAR II.

Perhaps it’s time to enjoy DirectX Raytracing on laptops soon?
