Dell Malaysia Updates Pricing for Cherry MX Keyboard on Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4

Earlier, we reported about the new Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4 having an optional Cherry MX mechanical keyboard upgrade. On Dell Malaysia, it was erroneously listed with an additional cost of RM1,202. Now, we have the correct pricing for it.

After our earlier report, the team at Dell Malaysia noticed that the price they listed for the Cherry MX mechanical keyboard upgrade for the Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4 isn’t accurate. They have since updated it to reflect the actual price, and it’s much lower than RM1,202. The optional upgrade is now listed with an RM499 price tag.

In case you missed it, the mechanical keyboard for both gaming laptops will make use of the new MX Ultra Low Profile switches, which are 3.5mm thick, which is a lot thinner compared to the 11.9mm-sized MX Low Profile switches. It’s built with stainless steel wings that can swing open and push down. Apart from that, it’s also made of thermoplastic polymer that should be able to withstand heat.

According to Alienware and  Cherry, the travel distance is 1.8mm and it’s said to give a satisfying feedback along with that signature “thock” sound. The way the switch was designed is to aid in typing accuracy and give it self-cleaning capabilities with each press.

From what we understand thus far, the keyboard design in both Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4 did not require any major changes or tweaks to accommodate the new Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile switches. The lid can also be closed just fine, which should give consumers a better idea of how thin the switches are.

The optional Cherry MX keyboard upgrade will come with AlienFX per-key RGB backlighting and full N-key rollover with anti-ghosting, so you won’t be missing anything from the original keyboard. It’s worth noting that all keys except for the function row will be utilizing the new mechanical switches if you opt for the upgrade.

Pokdepinion: Now this sounds a lot more believable. RM1,202 just to upgrade the keyboard is way too much if you ask me, but I wouldn’t be surprise if diehard fans are willing to pay that much.
