Samsung begins mass production of 512GB eUFS 3.0 — up to 2x faster than the eUFS 2.1 in the Galaxy S10 devices

Samsung has commenced mass production of the latest 512GB eUFS 3.0 NAND flash, based on their 5th generation 512Gb V-NAND die. The new storage will deliver up to 2x the speed eUFS 2.1 storage is capable of, with speeds now rivaling desktop SSDs.

To manufacture the 512GB eUFS 3.0 chips, Samsung is using 8 layers of the 512Gb V-NAND dies and a high performance controller. Samsung promises a sequential read speed of 2100 MB/s, which is faster than the affordable PCIe 3.0 x2 SSDs in the market. The write speeds are equally impressive at 410 MB/s, coming pretty close to what cheap SATA SSDs are capable of. Those speeds represent an amazing 2x improvement in terms of read speeds, and a not-too-shabby 58% upgrade for write speeds coming from UFS 2.1.

But that’s not all. Sequential is only applicable when you are transferring media in bulk. For daily usage, the random read and write speeds contributes more to the general responsiveness of the device. Samsung’s 512GB eUFS 3.0 storage promises up to 36% improvement in random read and write speeds, at 63 000 and 68 000 IOPS, respectively. With the multi-tasking capabilities of the Galaxy Fold, it should be able to really take advantage of all that speed.

The new flash storage will make it in time for the April launch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, but is just a tad too late for the more mainstream Galaxy S10 series. Galaxy S10+ users who opted for the 1TB variant need not feel outdated though, as Samsung’s 1TB eUFS 2.1 chips are also pretty fresh out of the oven.

For those who are waiting for more than 512GB of eUFS 3.0 goodness, rest assured that a 1TB variant is in the works, with mass production slated for the later half of the year, with a 256GB version joining the ranks as well. Perhaps we will see the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 lineup featuring eUFS 3.0 storage across the board?
