As many of you may know by now, Apple has removed the charger and EarPods from the box of their phones since the iPhone 12. There were a number of reasons behind the move, most notably to be more eco-friendly from manufacturing to shipping the devices out. Now, this move has reportedly saved the company a whopping USD $6.5 billion (RM27.3 billion approximately).

This is made possible as including less accessories inside the box would allow the company to slim down the packaging. In turn, this also allows the company to ship out more iPhones faster as it’s said to allow roughly 70% more devices in a single shipping pallet. As for eco-friendliness, it’s said to reduce Apple’s yearly carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons, which is said to be equivalent to removing half a million cars from the road.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the move was financially-motivated, though we also can’t deny that it helps reduce waste since there are many of us who don’t use chargers that are included with the device. This is especially the case now with the rise of GaN chargers, which often comes with multiple ports and fast charging capabilities.

From what we understand, the small box has saved Apple about 40% in shipping costs, and they’re also doing this to help offset the cost of the new 5G modems in the new iPhones. Of course, the company would stand to profit more when consumers purchase them separately as well.

Pokdepinion: I’m not surprised to see it being a profitable move and I foresee more companies following suit. Samsung has already done it already, and I personally have no complaints about it.
