There are few smartphones that garner as much buzz as the Google Pixel series. The very first Google Pixel became the top camera smartphone on DxOMark. Then the second one repeated the feat again. With a single camera when the competition were touting two cameras. The latest Google Pixel 3 hasn’t appeared on DxOMark yet, but we can expect great photography chops.

For starters, it comes with a 12.2MP f/1.8 dual pixel camera with OIS and EIS. There’s also a spectral + flicker sensor. However for some odd reason it doesn’t do 4K@60p. The competition has definitely moved on, and 4K@60p is like a pre-requisite of flagships. No idea what’s Google doing here.

The two devices feature what you would expect from a flagship in 2018. A Snapdragon 845, 4GB RAM, up to 128GB of storage, IP68 ingress protection and also wireless charging. Even the popular notch is available, but only if you opt for the larger Pixel 3 XL. Due to Google’s insistence in delivering a stereo sound that’s apparently tuned by a Grammy award winner, you get thick bezels that make no sense. Or a thick notch which makes even less sense.

On the bright side, you get a 6.3″ OLED display if you pick up the Pixel 3 XL, and a 5.5″ OLED one if you choose the Pixel 3. The former also offers a higher QHD+ resolution, versus the FHD+ resolution on the latter. Both displays offer full 24-bit color depth and HDR support.

Of course, no Pixel would be complete without the latest features from Google. They are made by Google after all, duh. The Pixel 3 devices come with the new Google Assistant feature which will allow Assistant to talk to people you don’t feel like talking to. Like the nice waitress who will reserve your table at that nice restaurant. Oh well. Luckily it’s only limited to Pixel users in the U.S. For now.

The Pixel 3 is priced from $799 (~RM3317), while the Pixel 3 XL is priced from $899 (~RM3738). That’s for just 64GB of storage, and no expandable storage. Opting for the 128GB variant will push the price further up. You do get years of unlimited storage on Google Photos though. The devices will be available in Just Black, Clearly White and Not Pink. What’s not pink? It could be any color other than pink, but it’s some sort of gold-beige hue. Meh.

Pokdepinion: There literally is no reason to make a notch if you are going to make it that big, Google.
