Corning Gorilla Glass has become the standard on most smartphone screens today because of its durability. The last updated formula was in 2014 when Gorilla Glass 4 was released and now, Gorilla Glass 5 is officially announced with an even further improved formula.

“With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses,” – John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass.

According to a global study, over 85% of smartphone users have dropped their phones at least once per year and 55% have dropped more than three time (I’m in the 55%). In addition, more than 60% smartphone owners reported dropping their devices from between shoulder and waist height.

With the new chemically strengthened glass, the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 survives up to 80 percent of the time when dropped face-down from 1.6 meters onto rough surfaces, outperforming competitive glass designs.

Corning Gorilla Glass has been used on more than 4.5 billion devices worldwide, including more than 1,800 product models across 40 major brands. Gorilla Glass 5 will allow manufacturers to provide the ultimate in high-resolution, touch-enabled devices. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is expected to be on the latest smartphone which are the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and iPhone 7.

Pokdepinion: Even with the latest Gorilla Glass 5, I bet smartphone users will still using tempered glass on top their Gorilla Glass 5, just in case.
