HONOR has been making huge steps forward in the smartphone industry since becoming an independent company, and their latest entry is a foldable flagship. The HONOR Magic V marks HONOR’s first foldable smartphone, and features various cutting edge features and the most powerful chipset they can get their hands on to deliver the best user experience possible.

HONOR Magic V: usable when open and also when folded

HONOR Magic V external display

HONOR went with a 21:9 aspect ratio for its 6.45″ curved OLED external display, that feels a lot more like a traditional smartphone. Versus the competition which opted for an external display that are overly long and narrow, which can be extremely unwieldy when you need to reach UI elements in the top corners of the display. When you unfold the device, you get a 90Hz 7.9″ display that offers more screen space for you to take advantage of.

A lot of comparisons were made against the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3, but one of the main ones that caught my eye was that HONOR managed to literally close the gap when the device the folded. Instead of the unsightly wedge like look of the Galaxy Z Fold3, the HONOR Magic V closes neatly with both halves flush against each other. HONOR achieved this with a “floating waterdrop hinge” that provides room for the screen to be tucked away neatly when the device is folded, and to push the display upwards to reduce the appearance of a hinge when it is unfolded.

Both displays of the HONOR Magic V is capable of displaying 100% of the DCI-P3  gamut, with support for 1.07 billion colors. It is also the first foldable smartphone to receive the IMAX Enhanced certification, promising an immersive movie experience unlike what any other foldable can deliver. Last but not least, the device is crafted from titanium, zirconium liquid metals and carbon fiber, which provides for a lightweight yet strong build.

HONOR Magic V camera

Under the hood, you have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mated to 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage. Keeping the lights on is a 4750mAh battery, with support for 66W fast charging. For imaging, you have 42MP selfie cameras both on the outer display as well as the folded one, as well as a triple 50MP camera setup on the back, comprising of a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide shooter and a 50MP color spectrum camera.

Pokdepinion: I just want to appreciate the fact that HONOR waited for foldable display tech to be more mature before making their very first one, instead of making half baked ones and trying to sell them.
