HONOR X8a Launches in Malaysia for Under RM1,000

HONOR has introduced its newest mid-range smartphone in Malaysia, part of the X8 series. The HONOR X8a features an upgraded MediaTek chipset, a larger screen, and a powerful 100 MP primary camera. In terms of design, the HONOR X8a has a similar look to the HONOR X8 with a flat frame, metallic back panel, and a square camera setup.

Its 6.7-inch LTPS LCD display boasts a punch-hole camera cutout, a resolution of 2388 x 1080 pixels, 16.7 million color output, and multi-touch capability. The phone also includes a side-mounted lock and fingerprint sensor, dual nano SIM support, and a USB-C port for charging and data transfer. However, it doesn’t come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, which shouldn’t be a surprise in this day and age.

The HONOR X8a is powered by the 4G-enabled MediaTek Helio G88 chipset, which is slightly less powerful than the Snapdragon 480+ processor in its predecessor. It is accompanied by the Mali-G52 MC2 GPU and has a single memory configuration of 8 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage. With a battery capacity of 4,500 mAh, it supports the brand’s 22.5W SuperCharge technology, and a compatible charger is included in the package.

It sports a triple camera setup on the back, including the 100MP primary sensor, 5MP ultra-wide, and 2MP macro. On the front, the phone features a 16 MP selfie camera with 2D face recognition, housed within the display’s camera cutout. HONOR claims the phone is capable of recording videos at Full HD (1920 x 1080) pixels using both the front and rear cameras.

The HONOR X8a will be available for purchase in Malaysia from the brand’s official stores and authorized retailers starting from 11th February 2023, in Cyan Lake, Titanium Silver, and Midnight Black colour options. It will retail for RM999, which happens to be the same price as its predecessor when it launched last year.

Pokdepinion: Given the price, I do wonder if it’s better to add some money and get the X9a, or if it’s still viable to just get this. Sure, the X9a is clearly better, but is it worth the extra money? One way for us to find out, stay tuned.
