Just like our personal computers, smartphones have also steadily gained more and more RAM as we advanced forward. Which just seems natural since we have higher expectations for multitasking and also increasingly complex apps which require more RAM to run smoothly. Well, it seems that a Huawei executive believes that optimization is the way forward, and not just throwing more and more RAM into smartphones.

Lao Shi, chief executive of the P-series, said that a smartphone with 4GB and 128GB of storage represents a better combination than having 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Citing Apple as an example — the latest Apple iPhone 7 Plus has just 3GB of RAM — he believes that more RAM just offers a sense of “my phone has more RAM than yours so mine’s better”, doesn’t really translate to an improved user experience and definitely adds costs that are borne by the consumers. Optimization is the way forward, according to his post on Weibo. Huawei is promoting their machine learning algorithms that was introduced in EMUI 5.0, claiming to improve your experience by optimizing its RAM management as you use your smartphone, so this is probably a pitch to draw some limelight to Huawei’s software expertise.

Of course, he is quick to add that you can do whatever you want with your money, and Huawei does offer smartphones with 6GB of RAM (the Huawei Mate 9 Pro, Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9 and Huawei P10 Plus all come with 6GB variants) if you really want that extra e-peen you will be getting from the additional 2GB RAM. What do you think? Do you agree with the guy, or do you think we should get, and demand, more RAM in our smartphones?

Pokdepinion: Personally, I don’t really mind if my smartphone has less RAM than the next one, as long as it runs smoothly. I know that upgrading from 2GB of RAM to 3GB RAM makes a lot of difference, but I have yet to see if moving from 4GB to 6GB will yield a similar improvement.
