The Huawei P10 features the Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 developed in partnership with the German experts. Building upon the Huawei P9, the P10 crams a 20MP monochrome sensor coupled with a 12MP conventional RGB sensor for improved dynamic range and sharpness in your shots. Despite sharing similar specifications on paper with the Huawei Mate 9, it seems that the Huawei P10 is better at photography than the Mate 9, raking in 87 points versus the Mate 9’s 85.

The Huawei P10 scores well in various areas, especially in the autofocus and texture aspects. The Huawei P10’s autofocus is “generally quick, responsive and accurate in all lighting conditions“, which scored it a strong 92. But they also noted that it’s autofocus was a fraction slower than its main competitors, which I would take to mean that the lack of sensor-wide phase detection autofocusing pixels did affect its speed. For the sake of comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge which is generally regarded as one of the fastest smartphones in terms of autofocusing, scores a 94 here.

Do note that DxOMark tested the Huawei P10 which features Summarit-H lenses with f/2.2 apertures, instead of the Summilux-H f/1.8 optics found on the Huawei P10 Plus. We would generally consider a wider aperture to offer even more flexibility in low light environments, and should yield a higher score than the P10’s. The Huawei P10 takes photography up a notch with 4K video recording which was missing in the Huawei P9. Also new is the Leica front camera.

The Huawei P10 will be available in Graphite Black and Prestige Gold at RM2499, starting from 31st March, with pre-orders starting on 24th March.

Pokdepinion: One of my favorite smartphones in terms of camera performance was the Nexus 6P, which scored only 84. I definitely have to try out a smartphone camera which scores 87.
