[LEAKED] HUAWEI P20 and P20 Lite design; a case of cases revealing the design, again

The HUAWEI P20 and P20 Lite’s designs have leaked out into the interwebs. Once again, it’s the Chinese case manufacturers that were too excited to showcase their latest designs to protect the upcoming smartphones. As it stands, the HUAWEI P20 series look pretty interesting.

HUAWEI P20

Two cameras are so last-gen. HUAWEI which was at the forefront of the current dual-camera craze, is going to take it a step further with THREE cameras on the back. Or so the leak suggests. The camera module’s positioning is also apparently going to be similar to the iPhone X. This is not going to be the first device to try and copy the fruity smartphone. @evleaks has pointed to the upcoming P-series smartphone to be capable of 40MP shots and 5x hybrid zoom with its 3 lens rear, co-developed with Leica.

What the case manufacturers do not seem to agree on is the screen. One shows what looks an 18:9 display with the fingerprint sensor at the bottom. One shows a full screen design. There is no hole for a rear fingerprint sensor, so unless HUAWEI has managed to design under-display fingerprint scanners of their own, it has to be below the screen. Or HUAWEI is going to emulate Apple yet again, relying on facial recognition which HUAWEI has been reported to be working on.

The 3.5mm jack may be retained in the HUAWEI P20, as there is a hole at the top of the case. It may be the cutout for a IR transmitter too. HUAWEI has been courageous enough to drop the 3.5mm jack in the Mate 10 Pro, so I don’t see why won’t they repeat it here.

HUAWEI P20 Lite

Perhaps the first “Lite” smartphone from HUAWEI bearing dual cameras on its back, the HUAWEI P20 Lite carries over some of the design cues found on the higher end HUAWEI P20. The leak shows a rear fingerprint sensor, but also a front that doesn’t appear to feature a FullView display.

Another leak points to the HUAWEI P20 Lite featuring a notch, which would mean a front that is fully filled by the display. The camera is horizontally aligned here though, which raises my eyebrows a little.

The HUAWEI P20 Lite appears to feature both an IR transmitter and a 3.5mm jack, as seen by the perforation on the bottom and top of the case. Specifications wise, we may be looking at yet another year of Kirin 65x, but hopefully HUAWEI sees fit to push out a new mid-range SoC, as the Kirin 65x is getting incredibly outdated now.

Pokdepinion: The HUAWEI P20 series look pretty interesting camera-wise, but if they hit the deck with the Kirin 970, it will fail to compete with the upcoming Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810 devices in terms of raw performance.
