With the steady decline of user-replaceable parts in smartphones, cases are often the only thing that we can change to customize our devices. HUAWEI might be taking the idea a step further, as they are reportedly working on a case that will bring 5G to the 4G-only HUAWEI P50 series, no thanks to the US sanctions against them.

HUAWEI P50 series to get a case to enable 5G connectivity?

I do look forward to seeing how will the HUAWEI P50 series interface with the cases, as the HUAWEI P50 series does not feature any form of connectors like pogo pins on the back. The HUAWEI P50 Pro and HUAWEI P50 both pack a Snapdragon 888 chipset, which should technically be capable of 5G, but unfortunately doesn’t, simply due to them being on the US’ naughty list.

Motorola has previously delivered a similar 5G-enabling case with the 5G moto mod for the Moto Z3, which supported the interesting-but-ultimately-unsuccessful moto mod ecosystem. There are very apparent pogo pins on the back of the device though, which are curiously not present on the HUAWEI P50 Pro.

In any case, HUAWEI will probably be doing this just as an act of defiance against the US sanctions. The HUAWEI P50 Pro is already a pricey RM4199, so I imagine few would even consider paying even more for a case just to add 5G capability. Especially with the state of 5G networks here in Malaysia.

Pokdepinion: Probably that’s not for Malaysia, since we can’t use 5G much anyway.
