Huawei has just official announced the Mate 9 Porsche Design, the second device the Chinese manufacturer has released in partnership with renowned brands. The first device, the Huawei P9, turned heads for their partnership with Leica, with an impressive monochrome + RGB sensor array. The new Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design will see the German sports car brand on board alongside Leica, with their combined efforts poured into a single, mind blowing device.

The Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design will feature a sexy curved back with a curved 5.5″ display pushing a resolution of 2560x1440p, making it the first smartphone from the company with a curved display, and also the first device to sport a resolution of 1440p. The SoC will be none other than the 16nm FinFET-based HiSilicon Kirin 960 which puts 4 high performance Cortex A73 cores running at 2.4 GHz, with 4 high efficency Cortex A53 cores running at 1.8 GHz. The move to Cortex A73 cores yields even better performance with further improved power efficiency. The octa-core Mali-G71MP8 GPU in the Kirin 960 is a lot faster than the one in the Kirin 950 too, with a 180% increase in GPU performance.

6GB of LPDDR4 ensures that you can multi-task till your hearts content, while 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage will keep even the most avid of media hoarders happy. Speaking of media, the Leica-certified dual camera system has been upgraded too, combining a 20 MP monochrome sensor with a 12 MP RGB sensor. OIS has also been added, and the Mate 9 Porsche Design will also be capable of something called Hybrid Zoom, which will offer lossless zooming.

A 4000 mAh battery keeps the lights on, with the Huawei SuperCharge technology to juice up a totally empty battery to 60% charge in half an hour. The Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design will run the latest EMUI 5.0 interface, based on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat. The asking price? €1,395, or around RM6500. If you have the moolah for it, you might be able to get it here, as Huawei will make it available in EMEA/APAC markets, but not the US, for some reason.

If you are from the US, or want a piece of Huawei’s latest tech, there is the relatively affordable, standard Huawei Mate 9. You get a larger 5.9″ 1080p 2.5D display, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. The rest of the specifications are pretty much the same, with the same SoC, camera system and battery. Oh, and on the Huawei Mate 9, the fingerprint sensor will be on the back, instead of in front like on the Mate 9 Porsche Design. The standard Mate 9 will be a lot more palatable in terms of pricing, coming in at €699 in Europe. Malaysia will be among the first countries to see this device, so stay tuned.

Pokdepinion: This is the first time I see a smaller device being pricier than its larger brethren, but of course, the sexy dual-curve design is hard to ignore… I wonder if I will get a chance to experience the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design.. In any case, the dual camera system and SoC of the Honor 8 is already plenty impressive, so an upgrade will definitely be even more awesome to see.
