With the previous #BatteryGate issue in mind, it’s no surprise that Apple is taking extra steps in ensuring that the battery in iPhones will have a healthy lifespan. One of the steps taken to do just that lies within iOS 13 with a pretty nifty trick.

In iOS 13, your iPhone will learn your routine with the power of AI, and will stop charging your phone past 80% until it thinks you might need it. That may sound counterproductive in terms of battery life but there’s a good reason for that.

Lithium batteries in devices like your laptop and smartphone work best between 20% and 80%. Anything apart from that is when the battery faces the most stress. This stress can result in a lowered life span and may cause all sorts of power issues. Staying within the 20% to 80% range will ensure a longer lifespan and more consistent battery life in the long run.

To setup this feature in iOS 13, all you have to do is:

  • First, you’ll need iOS 13 on your device. If you haven’t already updated, check out our handy guide to do just that
  • Once updated, you’ll want to go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health
  • Enable the Optimize Battery Charging option and you’re ready to go

Now, your iPhone will learn your daily routine, and only charge up to 80% battery until close to the time it thinks you’ll need to use it. In the long run, it’s both beneficial for consumers and Apple themselves as there will be less headaches and less cost to worry about in general. Interestingly, the feature isn’t available in iPadOS at the moment, but perhaps it will be added later on.
