One thing that MediaTek managed to do in 2019 was to surprise us with their Helio G90T. While it wasn’t nearly as ubiquitous as its rival, the Snapdragon 730, the Helio G90T in the Redmi Note 8 Pro proved most of our prior assumptions about MediaTek’s chips wrong. It ran cool, delivered surprisingly good GPU performance, and was overall a great chip. But there’s more to come.

MediaTek reportedly has plans to bring a slightly slower Helio G-series chipsets, targeted at even more affordable gaming smartphones. I kinda doubt that a gaming-oriented chipset less than the Helio G90T can really deliver a good gaming experience, but I do hope to be pleasantly surprised.

The Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company is also apparently going to explore the tri-cluster CPU configuration that they pioneered in the near future, which proved popular among all the flagship chipsets last year. Essentially it means you have big, medium and little cores, instead of the old big.LITTLE configuration.

Regardless to say, it will be foolish to overlook MediaTek’s gaming chipsets in the near future, as they have proven that they are more than capable of designing some pretty great chips.

Pokdepinion: A competitive chip that goes head-to-head in the lower mid-range segment dominated by the Snapdragon 665 would be pretty interesting.
