The OnePlus 6 is finally here. Touted as the next flagship killer, the OnePlus 6 has hit the deck with some pretty interesting changes from OnePlus’ previous devices. For one, it decided to join the crowd with a notch and glass back. Also, the camera setup which was probably one of the OnePlus 5T‘s main drawbacks has also been upgraded with new sensors and OIS.

The dual camera setup features a 16MP sensor coupled with a 20MP sensor for depth detection and more accurate bokeh processing. Simply by looking at the resolution, you may think OnePlus reused the camera modules from the 5T. But they didn’t. The new 16MP f/1.7 camera in the OnePlus 6 sports the Sony IMX519 sensor with 1.22 µm pixels. This translate to 19% larger pixels as compared to the 16MP sensor in the OnePlus 5T. Throw in OIS and there should be some serious improvements in low light image quality. Meanwhile the secondary camera is brought over from the OnePlus 5T, with the 20MP Sony IMX376K sensor behind a f/1.7 aperture. The front camera on the OnePlus 6 also sports the same sensor as the OnePlus 5T.

Bucking the trend of 960fps slow-mo video, OnePlus decided to go for 720p480. The slow-mo effect is less intense, but you get to shoot for up to 1 minute, longer than what the competition offer. This definitely seems like a good trade-off in terms of practicality. You can enjoy your videos on the new notched 6.28″ 19:9 FHD+ Optic AMOLED display with support for the DCI-P3 color space.

Then we have the Snapdragon 845, mated to either 6GB or 8GB RAM. Storage options range from 64GB all the way up to 256GB, with no support for microSD expansion. The hardware is kept alive by a 3300 mAh battery, with the renowned Dash Charge technology for fast charging. Despite switching over to a glass back, OnePlus omitted wireless charging, meaning the only way to juice up is via the USB Type-C port.

Interestingly, OnePlus packed the OnePlus 6 with weather protection. They didn’t specify an IP-rating, and they did mention not to bring it for a swim. It is claimed to be capable of surviving a drop in the sink or a spilled glass of water. The ports and body are sealed to protect against water ingress, but once again, there is no immersion protection. No idea why they didn’t just go the whole 9 yards and just give it the much-requested waterproofing that OnePlus’ lineup sorely lacks.

The OnePlus 6 is available in Silk White, Mirror Black and Midnight Black. The Midnight Black looks unique with its matte look, but it’s all under the smooth glass back, while the Silk White and Midnight Black look as glossy as you would expect glass to look. Priced from $529 (~RM2098.81), the OnePlus 6 is still priced very competitively against its flagship-class peers, despite being more expensive than its predecessor.

Pokdepinion: I despise the notch, but this one seems that bit more interesting. Wish there was wireless charging and perhaps an under-display fingerprint sensor, but maybe those will need to wait until the OnePlus 6T arrives.
