The best solution to the notch is to remove the front camera entirely from the front of the device like what Vivo did for the Vivo NEX, or move it to the bottom for some inconvenient selfies. OPPO decided to go with the former, hiding the front camera to make way for a perfect notchless display. But unlike the Vivo NEX, they hid all the cameras.

For some reason, OPPO even went ahead to hide the rear cameras as well. The entire top is motorized to slide up and reveal the cameras as well as the hidden 3D facial recognition scanners for true facial recognition ala iPhone X. Yet another similarity that the OPPO Find X shares with the Apple flagship is the lack of any fingerprint scanners. And since the sole security measure is hidden, you actually have to wake the OPPO Find X, swipe up and let the popup facial recognition scanner identify you.

A drawback of this sliding mechanism is that it is nigh impossible to add water resistance — which the OPPO Find X lacks — and also the fact that more moving parts mean more points of failure. The fact that even the rear cameras and facial recognition scanner are hidden are definitely something that is worth considering. What happens when the motor inevitably fails? Can it be slid open manually? The gap in the sides when the top is open is also far from aesthetically pleasing. But at least OPPO has succeeded where many other Chinese manufacturers have failed, simply by designing a flagship that looks nothing like iPhones.

You can expect the OPPO Find X to come with your usual flagship niceties, like a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and fast charging to juice up its 3730 mAh battery. OPPO’s VOOC fast charging technology is no joke, and still ranks pretty highly as one of the fastest charging to date. The OPPO Find X runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, with OPPO’s proprietary Color OS skin applied. The OPPO Find X can be found in China first, with other regions to follow. Unlike a lot of fancy smartphones by Chinese brands, the OPPO Find X is destined for international markets, so you might be able to buy one here in Malaysia.

[UPDATE 1] OPPO Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition

[UPDATE 2: Availability] OPPO Find X officially revealed — a throwback to the days of slider phones, but have they overdone it? 25

OPPO partnered with Lamborghini to bring the OPPO Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition, which aside from the unique aesthetics that evokes images of supercars, there is also a faster charging technology. OPPO’s latest Super VOOC Charge technology is exclusive to the OPPO Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition, fully charging the 3400 mAh battery in just 35 minutes. Now, that’s seriously fast!

[UPDATE 2: Availability]

The standard OPPO Find X will be priced at an eye-watering 999 euros (~RM4629) with availability to commence this August, while the OPPO Find X Automobili Lamborghini Edition will be priced at 1699 euros (~RM7873). The pricing is really quite over the top, but given that the prices in EU doesn’t translate to Malaysian pricing that well, we hope to see it priced more reasonably if it ever makes it to our shores.
