There is a new entry in the Snapdragon 4-series SoC, and it’s the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480. It is targeted for affordable smartphones and it has the Snapdragon X51 5G chip integrated, which is the same 5G chip found in the more powerful Snapdragon 690 SoC.

The Snapdragon 4-series is seen as a mainstream option, with the Snapdragon 8-series dedicated for top-of-the-line flagship devices and Snapdragon 2-series for entry-level devices. With the addition of the new Snapdragon 480 SoC, it brings 5G connectivity to a larger audience, making it more accessible for the average consumer.

Previously, the chipset with 5G connectivity that is within reach for mainstream consumers would be the Snapdragon 690 and 765. The Snapdragon X51 5G chip itself is said to be capable of delivering up to 2.5Gbps and 800Mbps download speeds for 5G and 4G respectively. As for upload speeds, they are rated at 660Mbps and 210Mbps.

The Snapdragon 480 SoC will be equipped with an octa-core Kryo 460 CPU with clock speeds of 2.0GHz, Adreno 619 GPU, Hexagon 686 DSP, and Spectra 345 ISP. Apart from that, it will also include support for 120Hz refresh rate for Full HD+ displays and Quick Charge 4+.

As for what devices this new chipset will be powering, it is still unknown at this point in time. Given that we just started a brand new year, we would not be surprised to learn of new devices running this SoC sooner rather than later. For now, we will report more on this as soon as information becomes available so stay tuned.
