Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 the SoC Powering 2021 Flagship Smartphones

Contrary to popular belief, the next flagship SoC by Qualcomm isn’t the Snapdragon 875, but the Snapdragon 888. It will be the one powering a whole bunch of flagship smartphones and if you’re not sure what to expect from it, let’s check it out.

At the Snapdragon Tech Summit, Qualcomm has officially unveiled the Snapdragon 888 SoC. It will be the chipset powering upcoming flagship smartphones of 2021, including Xiaomi, Sony, ASUS, OnePlus, and more. Previously, many expected it to be called the Snapdragon 875 given the names of the previous high end SoCs.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 will have a 5G modem fully integrated into the chip, and is the first from the company to have this. It will have their own X60 modem based on a 5nm process for better power efficiency as well as 5G carrier aggregation across mmWave and sub-6GHz bands.

Apart from that, it also features their 6th gen AI engine via a tweaked Qualcomm Hexagon processor. This will result in major performance boosts and efficiency for AI-related tasks. While Qualcomm mentioned that the Adreno GPU used here will have the “most significant upgrade”, no specifics on the performance have been revealed.

For those of you who prioritize on mobile photography, the Snapdragon 888 is said to be capable of shooting 12MP resolution photos up to 120 images per second. This is made possible because of the update Image Signal Processor (ISP) built into the chip. No word on any improvements for video capabilities however.

There’s still plenty of details to be uncovered on the Snapdragon 888 SoC but it will be revealed as the Snapdragon Tech Summit goes on. We will report more on this as soon as information becomes available so stay tuned.
