Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 Open

Given the massive improvement the Exynos 2100 SoC brought to the table over its predecessor, the Exynos 990, many expected it to be the one powering the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3. Turns out, that might not be the case after all.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 Will Not Be Powered by Exynos 2100

According to notable leakster Ice Universe, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 smartphone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC instead of the Exynos 2100. While the latter has seen some major improvements compared the previous generation, the former still has it beat in terms of GPU performance and energy efficiency.

Given that the upcoming foldable smartphone will be the company’s highest end smartphone yet, it’s understandable why Samsung is doing this. On a different note, this also means that we won’t be seeing the Exynos 2100 with AMD Mobile Radeon GPU inside.

From what we know thus far, the Korean giant plans on making their Galaxy Z Fold lineup thinner and lighter so it would be easier and more comfortable to use overall. As a result, the upcoming foldable is said to be 13g lighter than its predecessor. We’re also made aware that it will be coming with an IP rating for dust and water resistance, which is also shared with the Galaxy Z Flip 2.

Apart from that, it’s expected to have S Pen support similar to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, a thicker UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) protection, 256GB internal storage, Android 11 with One UI 3.5, and a 4,400mAh battery. The features that no one manage to get details on yet is higher refresh rate and the cover display size change.

For now, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip2 is expected to launch sometime in the second half of 2021. Online rumours suggest that we may see it as early as July 2021 but until we get an official confirmation, we’ll just have to wait and see. We will report more on this as soon as information becomes available so stay tuned.

Pokdepinion: While I’m personally happy enough already with the Exynos 2100 given big of an improvement it is over the Exynos 990, there’s no denying the Snapdragon 888’s potential. This could make the camera on the Z Fold3 look better from optimizations and we can look forward to great battery efficiency.
