Qualcomm has just only launched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 very recently, and we only have one smartphone featuring the chip in Malaysia, namely the Samsung Galaxy S22 series. However they are reportedly pushing production of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus forward, presumably to move away from the shortcomings of the existing flagship chipset.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus manufactured on TSMC 4nm to offer lower thermals?

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus rumor

According to the rumor by 手机晶片达人, Qualcomm is intending to replace the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. For a chipset that’s barely two months old, it does seem rather premature, although a quick Google will probably suffice to explain why Qualcomm wants to do away with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 as quickly as possible.

As everyone is probably well aware of, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is currently manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm node, and also exhibits a lot of the same issues that the Snapdragon 888 did, including toasty thermals. Instead of simply optimizing the processor, Qualcomm is reportedly going with TSMC’s 4nm process to manufacture the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus.

TSMC’s manufacturing has been widely considered to be superior to Samsung’s, so it will remain to be seen if the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus will indeed turn out to be a more efficient and cooler chip. Based on rumors, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus will be dubbed SM8475, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 currently bears the SM8450 code number.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 platform

Usually TSMC doesn’t give the “Plus” variant their own model number, instead tacking on the “AC” suffix. A new model number hints that the new chip will probably offer a number of improvements over the ailing Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, on top of just the usual higher clock speeds seen with prior Plus versions of the contemporary flagship chipset.

Of course, take these rumors with a pinch of salt, as it is quite unlikely that Qualcomm will render their latest flagship chipset obsolete that quickly. The usual launch window for the “Plus” falls in the second half of the year, so maybe we will see the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus arrive in Q2 2022.

Pokdepinion: With rumors of Samsung not being able to supply enough Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, I wonder if we will see even fewer Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chips, since TSMC is even more heavily overloaded.
