The Xperia Z5 has just strutted its way to the top of the DxOMark Mobile charts, usurping the throne from Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge, and also taking a giant leap up to the top away from its predecessor, the Sony Xperia Z3 Plus.

For the uninitiated, the Xperia Z5 boasts a new 23MP Exmor RS sensor with a hybrid autofocus system that promises autofocus in 0.03s. The most interesting thing is that this isn’t the Xperia Z5’s final form yet. The tests are done on the default settings of each respective camera, which means that the Xperia Z5 is tested with its default resolution, which is 8MP with supersampling, not the image sensor’s full resolution of 23MP.

The Xperia Z5 trades punches with the Galaxy S6 Edge, with the S6 Edge coming ahead in certain areas and the Z5 in others, resulting in both scoring the same sub-score for stills. Speaking of which, both the Xperia Z5 and Galaxy S6 Edge use Sony sensors, which shows how experienced Sony is in making quality camera sensors for smartphones. The Apple iPhone 6 Plus lags behind both devices. However it also must be noted that the iPhone 6 Plus has the lowest resolution among the three devices compared here as well as being the oldest one.

The Xperia Z5 leads the other two phones especially in the stabilization department. The iPhone 6 Plus lags behind the Xperia Z5 by a pretty big margin According to DXOMark, “even with vigorous walking motion, we found the Z5’s videos to be well-stabilized. What’s more, just as when shooting stills, the autofocus system works really well for video, particularly in good light. It’s not bad when shooting video under low-light conditions either, just a little slower sometimes to kick in when changing scenes.”

Pokdepinion: It seems like Sony’s continued focus on improving its imaging department has paid off with the Xperia Z5 topping the DXOMark Mobile charts. After so many generations of mediocre camera performance, it is nice to see Sony to be the top dog in imaging. I still remember when Sony Ericsson phones were known for their excellent image quality at that time…
