Xiaomi might be going with a pretty premium triple-camera setup that comprises of all high-res sensors for the Xiaomi MIX 5 series, as well as a new in-house ISP, the Surge C2, if these rumors are to be believed. The Surge C2 will be successor to the Surge C1 which arrived in the Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold, although it seems that the chip didn’t make its way to other devices.

Xiaomi MIX 5 series: Surge C2 ISP and new high-res camera setup?

Mi Mix Fold

According to reports, leaked source code has revealed that the Xiaomi MIX 5 Pro will feature Xiaomi’s in-house Surge ISP, although whether it’s the Surge C1 or Surge C2 remains to be seen. However rumors do seem to point towards Xiaomi working on the second generation of their ISPs, and it probably is fitting for the Xiaomi MIX 5 Pro to feature a cutting-edge new ISP to handle its new camera setup.

The Surge C1 ISP in the Mi MIX Fold handled the autofocus, white balance and exposure, so we might see the Surge C2 ISP taking on more duties, which can include stuff like HDR processing, AI subject recognition and other camera-related features.

The report goes on to mention that the Xiaomi MIX 5 Pro will feature a 48MP selfie camera, as well as a new high-res triple camera setup on its back. There will reportedly be a 50MP main camera with OIS, a 48MP ultra-wide shooter and a 48MP 5x telephoto camera, also with OIS. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi MIX 5 Pro will share most of the cameras, except for the telephoto camera, as it is slated to feature a lesser 2X zoom. THe rumors are also unsure whether the Xiaomi MIX 5 will even feature the Surge ISPs.

Xiaomi-Mi-Mix-Alpha-launch

The Xiaomi MIX family has always been about Xiaomi’s experiments. While previously we have Xiaomi striving to achieve a full screen-to-body ratio — and actually surpassing 100% with the Mi MIX Alpha — we now have a new area of exploration: the camera. I guess it goes without saying that coming up with great smartphone cameras is still the key focus for many smartphone vendors, and Xiaomi will be taking a new step forward with the Xiaomi MIX 5 series.

Pokdepinion: I sure hope that the new camera hardware and Surge C2 ISP will allow Xiaomi to deliver more groundbreaking imaging experiences. The Xiaomi 12‘s cameras do seem to produce interesting results!
