The Android premium tablet is not exactly active. Most people who want tablets will either opt for something with Windows, or those with a particular fruit as its logo. HUAWEI doesn’t think the market is dead though, as they launch their MediaPad M5 and MediaPad M5 Pro offering premium features without making your wallet cry.

HUAWEI’s latest tablet pack the octa-core Kirin 960 chipset, mated to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The storage is expandable with up to 256GB microSD cards for more space to keep your files in. The IPS displays on both the HUAWEI MediaPad M5 and MediaPad M5 Pro feature the same high resolution of 2560 x 1600. Both tablets run EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo. With EMUI 8.0, these tablets also support EMUI Desktop, for a separate workspace in a single tablet. Now on to the differences:

The HUAWEI MediaPad M5 is targeted towards gamer who want a bigger screen to game on with a 8.4″ display and dual harman/kardon speakers for a more immersive audio experience. It is still considerably light at 316g, which definitely makes it more suitable for gaming. It also comes with WiFi 802.11ac support for a more stable connection. It features a massive 5100 mAh battery for long hours of use.

The name gives away HUAWEI’s intentions for this 10.8″ tablet. Featuring a bigger screen, the HUAWEI MediaPad M5 Pro features pogo pins on the back of the tablet to accept a keyboard case, as well as support for the included M-Pen active stylus for productivity. The stylus is capable of 50 hours of use on a single charge too, or up to 30 days of use based on HUAWEI’s estimates. The battery in the MediaPad M5 Pro itself is even larger at 7500 mAh, for up to 12 hours of 1080p video playback. Speaking of video playback, the quad harman/kardon speakers here will make you forget about getting tiny Bluetooth speakers and just use the built-in ones.

Pricing and Availability

The HUAWEI MediaPad M5 will be available in Space Gray and Champagne Gold, while the MediaPad M5 Pro is available only in Space Gray. The tablets are priced at RM1499 and RM1899 respectively. The MediaPad M5 is available in stores starting tomorrow, while the MediaPad M5 Pro will only start selling on 25th July.

To make the deal even better, MediaPad M5 buyers will receive a gamepad and six months of Viu’s premium subscription, while the MediaPad M5 Pro will come with a flip cover. GIfts are only available while stocks last, as usual.

Pokdepinion: The Kirin 960 chipset is a powerful one, and it is definitely welcome in a tablet form factor despite its age.
