Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus (which has since integrated), is reportedly working on a new smartwatch device in hopes to entering the fitness market. A previous report from Android Authority said the device was in the works before, until it got canned – alongside other smartwatch projects – during last November’s mass layoffs that shed over 11,000 employees. One project codenamed Milan was originally scheduled for 2023 launch with a $349 price.

Leaker Kuba Wojciechowski says the company is working on a new smartwatch which is based on the previous one it cancelled prior. His source claims that the first version was indeed cancelled – but the new version is said to get users to be familiar with the form factor. It may even be a part of Meta’s metaverse ambitions, among other gadgets such as the Quest headset lineup.

The device is said to physically resemble the “Milan” device, with a few minor facelifts. A custom version of Android (instead of WearOS) may be running in it, with Qualcomm providing the processing duties. However, no timeline has been mentioned with regards to this device’s development and its launch.
