Nioh

It seems like virtually everyone on the internet has been raving about the Dark Souls series for its unforgiving difficulty. Well, Team Ninja’s Nioh will be capitalizing on that as well with its own rendition of a superbly difficult action role-playing game. Nioh takes places in a fictional feudal Japan, where mythological creatures run rampant in the land.

Coupled with issues surrounding the samurais and the ninjas and you’ll have yourself a chaotic adventure ahead. Players assume the role of William, a westerner based on real-life sailor William Adams, who finds himself thrown into the middle of fictional Japan’s chaos and conflicts. Unable to return home to England, he has no choice but to settle in Japan and players will see him become the first ever “Western Samurai”.

Fun fact, Nioh has been in development sinc e2004 when it began as a multimedia project based on a script by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. It underwent multiple revisions in the first 8 years due to the dissatisfaction of producer Kou Shibusawa, which eventually led to the project being given to Team Ninja for its final 4 years of development.

Nioh will be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4 on February 7th 2017.

Halo Wars 2

The Halo series’ take on real-time strategy is back again with Halo Wars 2. In the game’s single player campaign, a brand new antagonist named Atriox, a powerful Jiralhanae chieftain and former Covenant military member, assembled a group of mercenaries in order to obtain the most powerful weapons platform the galaxy has ever seen. It’s up to players to stop his dastardly scheme as players slowly discover Atriox’s dark history with the Covenant.

Halo Wars 2’s new multiplayer mode, Blitz, adds a new depth into the game’s core mechanic as players focus on card-based strategy and deck building as opposed to the standard base building and resource management. Halo Wars 2 will be a part of Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere initiative, so players can play the game on both the Xbox One and Windows PCs with just a single purchase.

Fun fact, despite the success of the game’s predecessor, its developer Ensemble Studios had to shut down. As Microsoft’s internal division, 343 Industries, was in charge of overseeing and developing products in the Halo franchise, they pitched a collaboration project to Creative Assembly, who is known for their works on the Total War series. This is how Halo Wars 2 became a reality.

Halo Wars 2 will be coming to the Xbox One and Windows PCs on February 21st 2017.

For Honor

Set in a fantasy-based medieval period, For Honor is an action hack and slash videogame featuring 3 factions; the Knights, the Samurai, and the Vikings. A bloodthirsty warlord named Apollyon believes people from the 3 factions have become weak and wants to create war among the factions. Players are to choose which faction to side with and each faction will provide a unique perspective in the form of events, battles and agenda as created by the warlord.

For Honor also has a competitive online multiplayer mode. Players can create and customize their own characters and pit them against enemies in 5 different battle modes; king of the hill-style Dominion mode, 2 VS 2 team battle-style Brawl mode, 1 VS 1 Duel mode, 4 VS 4 score-based Skirmish mode, and a 4 VS 4 team-battle style Elimination mode. For Honor can be a bit gory at times so players with a weak stomach, beware.

Fun fact, For Honor will be Ubisoft’s first attempt at a hack and slash game. Because of this, For Honor is structured similarly to shooter games rather than a melee-based action game. It is part of an attempt by Ubisoft to inject a unique feel for the game, which is why creative director Jason Vandenberghe described For Honor as a “shooter with swords”.

For Honor will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PCs on February 14th 2017.

Lego Worlds

Minecraft has seen major success over the years and people tend to describe it as Lego in a videogame since it encourages creativity in terms of building the worlds and its settings. In fact, Minecraft has become a popular teaching tool when it comes to subjects like architecture, with the University of Hull being one of the more notable cases in utilizing it for higher education projects. But what if Lego were to actually be themselves in a videogame?

That is what Lego Worlds is, a sandbox game on Steam that is similar in nature to Minecraft. After being on Steam’s Early Access for 2 years, Lego Worlds is finally getting an official release. In Lego Worlds, players can build the world as they see fit using Lego bricks. Whether they want to recreate iconic buildings from the real world like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or do something completely original is up to them to choose. And it’s not limited to just buildings as you can create literally any object you want.

Fun fact, Lego Worlds was initially teased in the back of a Lego set’s construction manual. The game was officially announced on 1st June 2015 alongside an early access release on Steam, which was done so in order to collect feedback from users for continual improvements of the game.

Lego Worlds is coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PCs on February 24th 2017.
