Singapore Esports Organizer Gets Sued From Valve Over Dota 2 Tournament

Nowadays, when you talk about esports, you think about games.. and the money that comes with it. Well over in Singapore, a law suit has been done by Valve to the Global Electronic Sports Championship as they’ve failed to pay out a tournament from 2018.

It seems that they’ve failed to pay for two tournaments back in March and May of 2018, where they accumulate to $750,000, which is a huge figure to say the least.

The winners of the tournament has reported that they haven’t been getting the payment that they deserve.

Here’s the response from Valve’s Vice President of Marketing, Doug Lombardi:

The Dota 2 event was the first Valve-sponsored tournament for the game in Indonesia and featured major teams, including Evil Geniuses, Natus Vincere, and Fnatic. GESC Indonesia and Thailand were particularly important because teams earned $300,000 in prize money and qualification points towards The International 2018, which is the largest Dota 2 event of the year. Similar to other esports like CS:GO, these events were Minors, which are direct qualification routes to Major tournaments.

Our agreements with tournament operators require timely payment to participants. We feel this is vital to the success of these events long term. When operators fail to meet those requirements, we follow up.

Aside from the lawsuit itself, there’s not much details that’s been let out, including the date when they’ll meet in court. We will sure to update the article should more information becomes available.

Pokdepinion: I wonder what’s the reasoning behind the failure of payment. I mean, if you are hosting a tournament with prize to offer, shouldn’t you be prepared with it first?
