There is yet another controversy in the Esports world. This time, we see Valve suing Global Electronic Sports Championship, better known as GESC, due to their failure to pay salaries and prizes from two events that took place in March and May 2018; GESC Indonesia and Thailand.

According to the Vice President of Marketing at Valve, Doug Lombardi, the lawsuit was filed on 8th April 2019 in the High Court of Singapore. It is said GESC owes roughly USD $750,000 to agencies, teams, players, and talents. Valve has also discontinued their partnership with them.

Our agreements with tournament operators require timely payment to participants. We feel this is vital to the success of these events long term. When operators fail to meet those requirements, we follow up.

For those of you who aren’t aware, the DotA 2 event in question was the first Valve-sponsored tournament for the game in Indonesia. It saw a number of major teams such as NaVi, Fnatic, and Evil Geniuses. Teams are supposed to earn USD $300,000 in prize money and qualification towards The International 2018.

GESC isn’t the only one facing similar issues however as Ukrainian organizer StarLadder has also received some heat for late payments of its CS:GO and DotA 2 talents. It was also for Valve-sponsored events, which of course caused quite a bit of havoc in the scene.
