Darkwood’s Devs Are Putting Their Own Game on Torrent; For People Who Can’t Afford It

It would seem that Darkwood’s own developer, Acid Wizard Studio, is putting their own game up on torrent. Has the world gone mad?

Videogame piracy isn’t new. In the past, it was pretty rampant but in today’s world, it’s not so bad anymore… or at least, not as easily accessible as last time. After all, having games being pirated means that the developers’ hard work will generally go unpaid to a certain extent. Which is why it’s baffling when a development studio is putting their own game up on torrent, free-of-charge.

Torrenting is alive and well, as the many who watched the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight illegally last night can attest to (ahem, Periscope streams ahem), but while users tend to torrent games like The Witcher series, it’s rare to see a torrent of a game from the developer themselves. Acid Wizard Studio, the minds behind the top-down horror game Darkwood, have announced that their game is available now on Pirate Bay.

What began as one user’s reason given for refunding the game lead the team to make it available for free, with the hopes that players who enjoy the game and want to support what the studio is doing will purchase the game via Steam, Humble Store, or GOG. Their stipulation:

Please, please, don’t buy it through any key reselling site. By doing that, you’re just feeding the cancer that is leeching off this industry.

They’ve also assured players that the download is the latest version of the game (1.0 hotfix 3) and is completely DRM-free, with no added extras or catches. They even avoided adding pirate hats. The download is intended to give players who may not have the means safe access to their beautiful and unique take on the genre.

Darkwood is only a little more than a week old, having launched officially on July 17, but with “overwhelmingly positive” reviews on Steam, it’s clear to see that players are loving the game.
