It seems that one of the bosses of Electronic Arts (EA) reveals on how he struggles with the the idea that EA is often seen as “a bunch of bad guys” in the gaming industry.

EA is probably one of the largest and oldest gaming publisher in the world, where the company was founded back in 1982. Matt Bilbey, the company’s EVP of strategic growth, explains that when EA makes a mistake, these issues are magnified, thanks to their size and scale.

He says “25 years at EA and I still struggle with the external perception that we’re just a bunch of bad guys. We love making and playing games. Unfortunately, when we make mistakes on games, the world knows about it because it’s of a size and scale”.

Loot box raised controversy to gamers all around

Back in 2017, controversy arose with Star War: Battlefront II over the issue of the game’s implementation of loot boxes as well as micro-transactions. Thankfully, it was all excluded before the game’s public release. It did however sparked a hot topic on whether loot boxes should be included in games or not.

Bilbey also spoke on the company’s direction. As the company grows bigger and bigger, there’s always the impression that they will be “disconnected” from new and original ideas (for their games). To answer that, EA Originals steps in. “EA Originals is our opportunity to connect with that talent and those smaller ideas. When you are part of a big company, it’s too easy to fall into the trap where when you see a game concept, it has to be big”.

Previously, EA was investigated for their loot boxes in FIFA, you can read more on that here.

Pokdepinion: Aside from the micro-transaction issue, I feel that their games rapidly decrease in value since they come out with yearly titles such as FIFA, Battlefield, and the likes. I wish that they come up with a wide range of titles. A Way Out was quite ‘okay’ to be honest.
