Smosh / Smosh Games Parent Company Defy Media Shutting Down

YouTube is the biggest video sharing / streaming website on the internet today. We’ve seen plenty of your regular, everyday folk become big stars and helped made YouTube the platform that it is today. One of those channels is Smosh, who later started a secondary gaming channel called Smosh Games. We may have to bid them farewell as we have received word of parent company Defy Media shutting down.

In a statement given by Defy Media, they have officially ceased operations immediately, so we won’t be seeing any new content coming from them. The parent company also stated that this was a result of “market conditions got in the way of us completing our mission.” What exactly is this supposed to mean? Who knows for sure.

While this means that we won’t be seeing new videos from Smosh and Smosh Games, it might not necessarily be the end for them just yet. Co-founder Ian Hecox tweeted that they are already looking to find a new home for the channel.

As of right now, a notice has been given to the employees in their Los Angeles office which stated that they will be officially closing down in January 2019. As to what the employees will be doing from now until then, no one except for those within the company knows for sure.

Defy Media has seen a number of issues such as the lawsuit with former employee Andy Signore, and people on the internet claiming that the company owes them or their clients a sum of money. However, former Smosh star and co-founder Anthony Padilla has uploaded a YouTube video detailing some of the “shady business” that the parent company has been running.

Since then, we’ve seen the likes of The Jovenshire and Lasercorn chiming in on the matter. One thing’s for sure, it’s a sad day for YouTube and fans of the channels. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing them in another form or fashion in the future. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.
