Details of the Xbox One’s Project Scorpio has finally been unveiled!

As we reported yesterday, the long awaited mid-life cycle upgrade to the Xbox One currently known as Project Scorpio has finally been revealed…somewhat. We have all the important details you need but it’s still missing one vital detail, unfortunately.

All You Need to Know About Xbox Project Scorpio

So first things first, you must know that Project Scorpio will be positioned as a premium option in the Xbox One lineup. This means that it should not be cannibalizing sales from other Xbox One offerings. While there is no official price yet for iot, it’s expected to be noticeably more expensive than the other Xbox One offerings.

The core concept is that Project Scorpio will be side-by-side with the Xbox One, offering the same games, the same fundamental gameplay, separated not just by 1080p and 4K resolutions but also by how committed the users are to owning the latest and greatest technology.

Project Scorpio’s GPU is said to be capable of 6 teraflops, and has a huge boost to memory bandwidth. To be precise, it’s 12GB GDDR5, which will surely aid the machine in displaying higher resolution textures.

It has a larger processor, faster HDD, a UHD Blu-Ray drive, and a state-of-the-art cooling system. It would seem that Microsoft is defying the console standards and have moved towards hardware that would be befitting of a gaming computer.

If those specs don’t make sense to you, allow me to simplify it. The team behind Project Scorpio has created a machine that is so powerful compared to the original, that it should qualify as its own console. After all, it managed to run a Forza tech demo at 4K resolution running at 60 frames per second, which is not an easy feat.

Microsoft has promised that this will still be able to run Xbox One and Xbox 360 games without any issues. In fact, it’s expected that running those games on Project Scorpio will yield benefits such as consistent framerates across the board, better textures, and faster loading times.

This is what Microsoft said:

All existing Xbox games (including Xbox One Backward Compatible titles) will run smoother, look better and load faster without requiring an update or any work from developers. All games running on Project Scorpio will achievemore consistent framerates, faster load times, improved anisotropic filtering, and will run at their peak resolution if the title implemented dynamic scaling. In addition, developers will also have the option to update existing titles to further take full advantage of Project Scorpio’s advanced capabilities including full 4K assets and 4K resolution.

And yes, those specs actually show that Project Scorpio trumps the PS4 Pro in virtually every aspect. This means that theoretically, games will be able to run better on it instead of the PS4 Pro but of course, this isn’t guaranteed and is simply looked at from a hardware perspective. On the software side, if the games aren’t optimized properly, it would be the equivalent on jacking up grandma with steroids and telling her to run a marathon (Spoiler alert, it doesn’t go well).

Either way, it’s going to be exciting to see what Microsoft is planning to do with this. Stronger hardware doesn’t guarantee win, it’s the game lineup that matters. If Microsoft wants to turn the tables on Sony, they better be prepared with a solid lineup of games soon, especially with Fable Legends and Scalebound being cancelled which disappointed many Xbox loyalists.

Project Scorpio is expected to be officially launched in Q4 2017, with some words going around that it will be in November. Take the latter part of the information with a pinch of salt.

Pokdepinion: I wonder if I can modify the Xbox One and turn it into a full-fledged computer running Windows 10. If that’s possible, I might actually opt for that instead of building a new rig, just to have a more mobile desktop around. In all seriousness, the specs look solid as heck, and I can’t wait to see when it’s finally released.

The specs does look very interesting indeed. Although they’re basically using Jaguar architecture for the CPU, they mentioned that they’ve tailored it specially so that it is integrated directly into the DirectX12 engine. This allows the same Jaguar CPU as the original Xbox Ones and PS4s to do less work for the same process.
I do somehow hope that Sony do have something they’re still hiding from their PS4 Pro though, because as good as the specs of Project Scorpio sounds like, I still will buy the PS4 Pro. :P

      Hi there,

Honestly, this is one of those things that I believe only looks good on paper. Sure, you can have better graphics and stuff but this will all boil down to whether they can optimize it for use with the stronger hardware. Well, that, and if the PlayStation library of games is better, no point in having strong hardware even :)
