MultiVersus, the well-received free-to-play platform fighter, will be shutting down its online servers in 90 days to improve the game and create new content. Read on for more details on the shutdown and what to expect from the game’s full launch in early 2024.

MultiVersus to Shut Down Online Servers, Game Director Confirms

MultiVersus, the free-to-play platform fighter, will be shutting down its online servers on 25th June 2023, marking the end of its open beta phase. In an update video, Game Director Tony Huynh confirmed that the development team will be putting all of their focus on improving the game and creating new content to gear up for a strong full launch in early 2024. While the online servers will be offline, players will still have access to training mode as well as offline matches. All unlocked cosmetics and items will remain available when the game returns for its full launch.

During its open beta phase, MultiVersus amassed over 150,000 concurrent players on Steam, but the game’s player count has drastically decreased over time, suffering a 99% drop over the course of eight months. The reason behind the decline is unknown, with speculation ranging from the output of new characters slowing down over time to the game’s overcentralizing combo-heavy metagame.

In the update video, Huynh promised that the game’s full launch will bring improvements in netcode, progression, and matchmaking, as well as new characters, maps, and modes. With this move, the development team aims to place MultiVersus in its most appealing state possible for its full launch in 2024.

Although the exact cause behind the decline of MultiVersus’ player count remains unclear, the development team’s decision to shut down the online servers for a period to focus on improving the game is a promising move. Fans of the game will have to wait until early 2024 for its full launch, but the improvements and new content being promised should make the wait worthwhile.

Pokdepinion: It was fun to play at first but it got stale relatively fast since there’s a hard limit of 4 players per game, and there’s nothing much else you can do. Hopefully they will add a bunch of new game modes and an 8-player option for more chaos.
