Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Pokdepicks 5 Awesome Games to Look Out for in April 2020

The remake of one of the most popular games in history, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a role-playing game by Square Enix. The game follows the story of Cloud Strife, a former First Class soldier turned mercenary who is aiding Avalanche, a group that seeks to save the planet from the misuse of Mako energy led by Barret Wallace.

Unlike the original iteration, the combat system will be more action-oriented. However, fans of the original style can switch to a more passive combat system which focuses more on tactics. Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be released in episodic format, with the upcoming release being the first episode which covers all the way to when the group leaves the city of Midgar.

Fun fact, despite the first part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake covering a small fraction of the whole game’s story, there is expected to be as much content as a numbered Final Fantasy game. Square Enix has mentioned that they will be expanding various areas and include new content, so the game will play quite differently from its original iteration.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4 on 10th April 2020.

Resident Evil 3

Following up on their recent horror game remake’s success, Resident Evil 3 is a remake of the survival horror game of the same name from the original PlayStation. The game takes place in 1998 prior to the events of the previous game. Police officer Jill Valentine has to escape Raccoon City due to a zombie outbreak caused by the T-Virus.

Unfortunately, she is hunted by an intelligent bioweapon known as Nemesis, who is tasked with taking her and members of the police division down. At the same time, gamers will also follow the story of Carlos Oliveira, a mercenary hired by the Umbrella Corporation to help survivors. It is up to them to survive the chaos brought about by the virus outbreak.

Fun fact, as Nemesis plays a central role in the gameplay of Resident Evil 3, the monster was redesigned and given new ways to track down gamers. Game producer Peter Fabiano mentioned that the development team wanted to give gamers the sense of constantly being pursued by a relentless bioweapon by striking a balance between feeling anxious and also giving them periods of respite.

Resident Evil 3 will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on 3rd April 2020.

Gears Tactics

The spin-off of the Gears of War franchise, Gears Tactics is a turn-based strategy game played from a top-down perspective. It is a prequel set before the events of the first Gears of War game which follows Kait Diaz’s father, Gabe Diaz.

Gabe Diaz embarks on a secret mission to assasinate Ukkon, a Locust scientist involved in breeding monsters for the Locust horde. He is joined by fellow Coaltion of Ordered Governments soldier, Sid Redburn.

Fun fact, executive producer Alex Grimbley mentioned that the development team simply took the existing Gears game and just moved the camera upwards. Essentially, it’s supposed to have the same look and feel as a regular Gears game but from a different perspective and focus on tactical combat.

Gears Tactics will be coming to PC on 28th April 2020 while the Xbox One version is still in development.

Trials of Mana

Yet another major refresh in the list, Trials of Mana is a remake of a 1995 role-playing game classic, Seiken Densetsu 3. The game takes place in a fictional world where the Goddess of Mana used the Sword of Mana to subdue eigh Benevodons, monsters of destruction. These monsters were then sealed in eight Mana Stones.

While rebuilding the world, the Goddess transformed into a tree and fell into a deep slumber for many years to regain her strength. Unfortunately, the forces of evil sought to free the beasts soon after in order to take over the world. How the story progresses this point will depend on which characters the player chooses first.

Fun fact, the original iteration of Trials of Mana was a Japanese-exclusive game. However, the game received massive support outside of Japan due to it being revolutionary at the time especially in graphics. It was so popular that a dedicated community made a fan translation patch so English-speaking gamers can also enjoy the game.

Trials of Mana will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on 24th April 2020.

Sakura Wars

From the same company that brought you Sonic the Hedgehog, Sakura Wars is a cross-genre game that brings action role-playing, visual novel, and dating simulator elements together. Prior to the game’s events, the Great Demon War resulted in the closure of the Imperial and Paris Combat Revue’s Flower Divisions and the New York Combat Revue’s Star Division. With the revues’ actions made public, the World Luxuriant Opera Federation is formed with several international divisions.

The game itself takes place in 1940, where Combat Revue’s commander Sumire Kanzaki recruits Imperial Japanese Navy ensign Seijuro Kamiyama to become the captain of the new Imperial Combat Revue’s Flower Division. The division once again faces a new demon invasion and participates in the upcoming tournament along with a host of other characters while trying to keep their home at the Imperial Theater open.

Fun fact, Sega initially ended the Sakura Wars franchise in 2008. At the 2016 Sega Fes in Tokyo, Sakura Wars was voted the most requested revival by fans. While the game’s development already started prior to the event, the massive support by fans at the time led to the development team going full force on the project.

Sakura Wars will be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 4 on 28th April 2020.
