Sony is Committed to Supporting the PS4 Longer Than PS3 26

With the new generation of gaming now here with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, there will still be a large number of gamers who will stick with the PS4. If you don’t plan on hopping on the next gen bandwagon yet, don’t worry as Sony is committed to support the PS4 for a longer time than the PS3.

According to a recent interview on Edge Magazine, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan talked about taking a different approaching with transitioning from the PS4 to the PS5. The idea here is to slowly phase out the PS4 compared to the more abrupt change with the previous generation’s PS3.

We do feel that we have a responsibility to that very large community, and an opportunity to carry on making great PS4 games for as long as the need is there. I think you will see a tail with PS4 that you did not see with PS3. But that said, as time passes, you’re going to see more and more emphasis on PS5 development.

This is particularly great news for gamers who plan on waiting for a price drop or having trouble securing the PS5 due to stock issues and scalpers going crazy for it. You can still enjoy new games on the older console so you won’t be missing out. Given that the PlayStation 4 is Sony’s 2nd best selling console so far with over 113 million units shipped thus far, it would not be a wise decision to alienate these gamers.

It’s also much easier to transition from the PS4 to PS5 given that the next gen console has backwards compatibility support. While not 100% of the PlayStation 4 games are playable, most are indeed compatible.

It is worth noting that while first party studios will continue to focus on the PS4, 3rd party studios will want to focus more on bringing their creations to the newer generation with stronger hardware. While some will offer a next gen upgrade one way or another, there will likely be a number of these games that won’t be available on the older console.
