Malaysians will finally be able to purchase a NM card to expand the storage of their HUAWEI Mate 20 devices. The new proprietary storage expansion card was not launched together with the HUAWEI Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro here in Malaysia, but it will reportedly be available next week.

HUAWEI’s latest Mate 20 series do not support microSD cards, but instead they accept a new proprietary memory card standard called NM cards, which is currently only supported by the HUAWEI Mate 20 series. It is claimed to be 45% smaller, allowing HUAWEI to cram more into the HUAWEI Mate 20 devices.

In terms of performance, the NM cards offer similar performance to high-end microSD cards with read speeds of 90 MB/s and write speeds of 70 MB/s. HUAWEI Malaysia will offer only the 128GB NM card here in Malaysia, and it will be priced at RM298. With only HUAWEI making the cards, it will remain to be seen if it will take off and be used by other smartphone makers.

Do you think the NM card standard will be a part of future non-HUAWEI smartphones?
