Thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI), now it is possible detect Alzheimer’s symptoms up to 10 years ahead of time.

We’ve all seen what AI does to the human race, they wipe us out and take our place as the dominant race. Well at least on movies that is. In the real world, AI could do a world of good to us, with some researchers found that by using AI, they could detect Alzheimer’s earlier than before.

AI Detects Alzheimer's - Even 10 Years Before Symptoms 21While some researchers looked at blood and cerebrospinal fluid test and such, a group of researchers from the University of Bari from Italy might just have found the answer to detect Alzheimer’s, which they have developed an algorithm that can spot changes in the brain caused by the disorder. Even better is that, it is supposedly able to detect it up to 10 years before symptoms appear.

The trained AI was involved with 67 MRI scans, with 38 of them being Alzheimer’s patients and 29 of them were healthy patients. The researchers then divided the scans into small regions, with the AI doing its job analyzing the neuronal connectivity between.

Done with the training, the researchers then put the algorithms to the test by having 148 subjects being tested out by the AI. Out of that total, 52 of them were healthy, 48 of them had Alzheimer’s, and the other 48 had mile cognitive impairment (MCI), but are known to develop the disease 2.5 to 9 years later on.

Impressively, the AI system achieved a 86% accuracy on determining which patients where healthy and detecting someone with Alzheimer’s. Also, the AI could tell the difference between healthy brains and those with MCI with an accuracy of 84%.

Pokdepinion: It doesn’t matter who you are or where you came from. There’s someone in all of our lives that have been or will be affected by diseases such as this. If our technology can help make a better future for us, why not support it?
