Previous rumors of AMD Zen “Summit Ridge” or what we know now as Ryzen have pointed towards a 6-core variant coming out, known as SR5. According to the latest reports however, there will be no 6-core Ryzen CPU in the pipeline for now, simply because the AMD Zen architecture’s CCX units are four-core modules with their own L1 and L2 caches, and will not be cut into half-modules.

As of now, it seems likely that AMD Ryzen CPUs will be available in three flavors, SR7 with 8C/16T, SR5 with 8C/8T (SMT disabled) and SR3 with 4C/8T (one CCX disabled). As all three variants are expected to feature unlocked multipliers, enthusiasts should enjoy overclocking without paying more just to be able to push the hardware they purchased further.
