AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and Threadripper 2920X now available — new Dynamic Local Mode also launched for the ThreadRipper 2990WX and 2970WX

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX and Threadripper 2920X slots in below the previously launched Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX and Threadripper 2950X, but still feature a whopping number of cores. The Threadripper 2970WX checks in with 24 cores and 48 processing threads, while the Threadripper 2920X packs 12 cores and 24 processing threads.

The enthusiasts who are interested in the boost clock speeds for single core applications are also in for a treat, as the Threadripper 2970WX goes up to 4.2 GHz, while the Threadripper 2920X does an even better 4.3 GHz. TDP is on the high side, with the former rated at 250W and the latter clocking in at 180W. Pricing wise, the Threadripper 2970WX is priced at $1299 (~RM5398), while the Threadripper 2920X is priced at $649 (~RM2697).

Dynamic Local Mode

Dynamic Local Mode is a pretty nifty ability to take advantage of the cores that have direct memory access for lower memory latency, and thus higher performance. Previously, switching between Local Mode, where the OS is “hinted” as to which cores have direct access to DRAM, and Distributed Mode, where the OS does not distinguish between the cores, requires a restart. Now with Dynamic Local Mode, it works on-the-fly.

This allows for some nice performance gains in gaming benchmarks, which is an area which is sorely lacking for AMD. Of course, no one in their right mind would buy a Threadripper 2990WX or Threadripper 2970WX solely for gaming, but all work and no play does make Jack a dull boy, right? So it’s nice to see AMD help Jack enjoy better gaming performance.

Pokdepinion: Well, it seems that AMD is really amping up on their performance. Nice to see that they are addressing their weakness in gaming performance, even in a workstation-oriented CPU that will most probably see very little gaming.
