We have just received word of ASUS ROG Strix GL503 which was launched back at Computex 2017 is about to arrive in Malaysia. While the ASUS ROG Zephyrus was eye-wateringly expensive, gamers who prefer a slightly more affordable gaming option will be able to get the ASUS ROG Strix GL503, a gaming laptop which sports a slightly thicker body at 23mm thin but a much more palatable price tag that is CONFIRMED to be below RM5000.

While it sports a less imposing price tag, the ASUS ROG Strix GL503 is expected to come configured with an Intel Core i7 7700HQ for more than adequate processing power for all the latest games. The CPU will be mated with 16GB of DDR4-2400 RAM, which is great to see when most OEMs pack their “gaming” laptops with 8GB of RAM or less. A GeForce GTX 1050 will be under the hood handling the graphics on this gaming system, which will be fed to a 15.6″ Full HD IPS panel with 100% sRGB coverage. 100% sRGB coverage means that this laptop won’t only satisfy gamers, but also people who work on color-sensitive tasks.

Internal storage will be courtesy of a 128GB M.2 SSD partnered with a large HDD for bulk storage. You will also be getting 3 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0 port and a USB Type-C USB 3.1 Gen1 (5 Gbps) port. For secondary displays, the ASUS ROG Strix GL503 will offer you a HDMI 1.4 port as well as miniDisplayPort 1.2.

All of that is packed into an nearly all-black chassis with minimal red accents, a surprising design decision from the brand that pioneered red-black designs on their gaming lineup. RGB illumination is also available on the keyboard as well as the iconic ROG emblem on the lid. Oh and this laptop weighs a svelte 2.3kg, just 100 grams more than the ROG Zephyrus.

Pokdepinion: For less than RM5000, the ASUS ROG Strix GL503 looks like a great deal especially if you need a color accurate display.

It’s not that we don’t want color accurate display, but there are a few laptops with GTX 1050, that can be had below RM3500. I know, this will come with only a HDD, not to mention Core i5, only 4GB of RAM, and TN panel screens, but the option is there.

It would be best if manufacturers would allow, easy access to upgrade both RAM and Storage Drives, so they can configure the laptop to come at base with good IPS, CPU and GPU, but low on both RAM and Storage so that user can simply upgrade it over time.

It’s true for tech heads. But it doesn’t apply to the normal user. Some users don’t want to tinker with the innards of the machine thinking it would spoil it, and would rather spend all the upgrade value in the beginning. Not to forget also, that spending upfront will always be cheaper in total cost of ownership compared to upgrading it over time. Especially in times where everything is skyrocketing upwards in price :)
