Celcom stops charging SST for prepaid services — hurrah for consumers?

As of 1st September, telcos have started charging prepaid users SST, thus giving consumers less mobile credit than they have paid for. Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has stepped up to say that telcos should not charge prepaid subscribers SST, and Celcom is probably one of the first to step up to the plate and announce that they are making their prepaid services exempt from SST.

They previously offered free credit with every reload, which wasn’t all that attractive. For one, the credit is only applicable for calls. While most users nowadays would most probably use their credits to purchase packages, the credit can only be used for calls. And to makes things worse, it’s valid only for calls to other Celcom numbers.

If that is not bad enough, the credit is only valid for 24 hours. That means if you do not finish using your credit within the 24-period, Celcom would just forfeit the remainder. Well, that’s all in the past now.

It’s nice to see Celcom step up to the plate and not charge SST to consumers. Waiting for the rest of the telcos to follow.
