17-inch laptops were behemoths that nobody wanted to carry around. That sort of changed with the ROG Strix GL704, but ASUS wasn’t going to stop just there. And now we have the ROG Zephyrus S (GX701). An ultraslim just like the ROG Zephyrus S GX501, but now with a 17.3″ PANTONE Validated 144 Hz G-SYNC display.

While previously the slim-bezel laptops from ASUS did not sport G-SYNC, this time ASUS managed to cram a G-SYNC panel into the ROG Zephyrus S GX701. And because G-SYNC does not allow Optimus to work, ASUS added a switch to choose between G-SYNC or Optimus, allowing users the ability to use the integrated graphics for better battery life.

ASUS’ goal with the ROG Zephyrus S GX701 was to design a gaming laptop with the smallest footprint possible. So small, in fact, that they managed to cram a 17.3″ display into a 15.7″ body. And so small, that they actually did not have enough room for a webcam to be built into the bezels of the ROG Zephyrus S GX701.

To make sure you still can use webcam functionalities, ASUS will be offering an optional ROG GC21 external webcam. It is designed to be mounted on top of the display, or just placed onto a table or shelf for a different perspective. This camera is capable of FHD at 60 fps, and can collapse down to the size of a thumb drive for easy portability.

Aside from the above few differences, the ROG Zepyhrus S GX701 does not differ too much from the ROG Zephyrus S GX501. Like the rest of the ROG gaming laptop line up, it will be offered with a GeForce RTX GPU, or specifically a GeForce RTX 2080 Max Q here, to deliver those pretty raytraced reflections and shadows. All that hardware will be cooled by the ROG Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) which lifts up the chassis to allow more air into the fans.

Does it pique your interest to own ? Well, pricing has yet to announced. We can expect it to arrive here in Malaysia in probably the next few months.

Pokdepinion: I have never carried a 17″ laptop. Maybe now’s the time to try one out?
