During the PC Game Show at E3 2017 in Los Angeles, Microsoft Game Studios announced Age of Empires: Definitive Edition. The game will be released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Age of Empires franchise, and will come later this year for Windows 10. A beta will also be available soon, and signups are open at the franchise’s official website.

It’s a remaster of the original, massively popular RTS game, and it promises 4K visuals, fully redesigned sprites, a re-orchestrated soundtracks, gameplay updates and more. It even includes the Rise of Rome expansion for good measure.

“20 years after its launch, Microsoft is proud to announce the Definitive Edition of the original Age of Empires. Fully remastered with 4k graphics, re-orchestrated soundtrack, major gameplay improvements, new narrative, Xbox Live multiplayer and achievements, the Definitive Edition brings back the classic game and its Rise of Rome expansion.”

Incidentally, Microsoft also shared that more news that fans “won’t want to miss” about the franchise will be announced at Gamescom this August.

The original game was released back in 1997, developed by Ensemble Studios. It sparked a large number of sequels and spin-offs, and remains one of the most beloved strategy games of all time.

Pokdepinion: One of the best RTS games around, we’re finally seeing it again in 4K HD glory. Would be nice if it was a completely new game altogether but a remaster works too.
