Grab Malaysia Will Charge Up to RM5 Cancellation Fees By End of March 2019

It appears that a big change is coming to the popular ride hailing service as Grab Malaysia is set to introduce cancellation fees of up to RM5 starting 25th March 2019 for passengers.

In their updated Passenger Cancellation policy, it mentions that Grab passengers who cancel their rides after five minutes of getting a driver will be charged a fee ranging from RM3 to RM5. To be precise, this is how the fee varies:

  • GrabCar, JustGrab, GrabShare, GrabTaxi (Metered / Executive), GrabCar Plus = RM3
  • GrabCar (6-Seater), JustGrab (6-Seater), JustGrab (10-Seater) = RM4
  • GrabCar (Premium), GrabCar Luxe (Vellfire for Airport) = RM5

It’s worth noting that passengers will be charged for late cancellation or if the driver cancels after waiting for more than five minutes. However, the passenger will not be charged both fees simultaneously. It is a requirement for drivers to wait for 5 minutes, 3 if its a GrabShare service, in order to be entitled to the cancellation fee.

However, the cancellation fee will be non-applicable if the driver doesn’t arrive within 10 minutes after the initially shown ETA (estimated time of arrival). For example, if a driver is said to be 2 minutes away but takes more than 12 minutes to arrive. Grab said that they have a way to detect if drivers aren’t moving towards the customer so passengers don’t have to worry about that.

This cancellation fee will be taken directly from the user’s GrabPay credit balance or credit / debit card. For those who are using cash to pay for their rides, the fee will be automatically added to their next ride. All of the fees will be channeled to the driver as compensation and the company is said to not take a single cent from it.

Pokdepinion: I say this is a great move by the company to take care of their drivers. But I certainly do hope they do something about the drivers who often cancel during peak periods.
